This course is intended for complete beginners and will cover the ins and outs of playing the ukulele. We’ll go over how to hold and tune your ukulele, and the various techniques of strumming and picking the strings to get the best sounds out of your instrument. We’ll also be working on the tough task of singing and playing at the same time.
Lenny rolls out the chords in a step-by-step system so you can remember them easily, but still have fun learning simple songs along the way. You’ll be jamming right from the start, and by the end of six weeks you’ll have six songs that you can take with you wherever you go!
Please bring a ukulele to the first class. Lenny wrote a little guide to purchasing one

Lenny (aka Ukulenny)
Lenny San Jose, aka Ukulenny, is an ukulele performer and educator based in Oakland, CA. He received his training at UC Berkeley (B.A. in Music) and earned his teaching credential at Cal State East Bay. After teaching music in public schools for 5 years, he made the leap to becoming a full-time musician, performing and leading workshops.
An avid multi-instrumentalist, Lenny grew up playing piano and writing songs on his guitar. He played cello in the high school orchestra and saxophone in the Cal Band. In 2009 he fell in love with the ukulele and found it to be the easiest and most fulfilling instrument to teach. He appreciated that it was a very sociable instrument that didn’t take itself too seriously, and that people enjoyed playing the ukulele in large groups. He started his ukulele career on the BART train and eventually was leading commenters in song. His YouTube channel has since gained over 75,000 subscribers and 9.9 million views. A sponsored Kala Artist, he spearheaded the Learn to Play Program on Kala’s website and app, and continues to preach the ukulele gospel nationwide.
